Hari Seldon Returns in Foundation Season 3
Apple TV+ released the official trailer for the third season of Foundation, the expensive and epic adaptation of Isaac Asimov’s Foundation science fiction series.
As viewers will remember, season 2 ended with Hari Seldon declaring that “the end of the Galaxy is upon us.” A massive time jump of 138 years was applied to start season 1, and one of 152 years to begin season 2. Season 3 is already 152 years in the future, as indicated by the trailer for the series.
The second season was about the Second Crisis and, as such, the action took place during a great deal of expansion and a threat of war between the Foundation and the Galactic Empire. The Foundation deviated from the actions of Asimov’s novel by the use of manipulation of the religious texts and the support this gave it in the outer reaches of the galaxy. Season 2 introduced the “Mentalics,” or a hidden colony of people with true psionic powers.
Season 3 is going to take place 152 years after the end of the previous season and is already being considered part of what is in Asimov’s work, the Third Crisis. “The Foundation has never been stronger or more widespread since its early days,” reads Apple TV+‘s synopsis. “The might of the now-splintered Cleonic Dynasty is waning. Both feel threatened from all sides, so they form an uneasy alliance to fight the darkness that is coming: a warlord with the ability to conquer the galaxy through armies and a terrifying power that bends the human mind to his will.” This warlord has one simple goal and is a key adversary in Asimov’s Foundation novel series: The Mule.
Asimov describes the Mule as “possessing a subtle ability to manipulate the emotions of those around him. He could make enemies into friends and love out of hate.”
In the trailer for the third season, Hari Seldon’s voice is heard in the opening. “Centuries ago, when we predicted the end of the galaxy, the Foundation was created to save humanity. But the coming darkness was always the turning point.” Following him is Gaal Dornick with a simple, “We’re out of time.”
Mule is an army leader who appears in Asimov’s Foundation novel series, and it is hinted in this trailer that he will be looking to start an empire of his own, using new powers of influence. “I can turn your enemies into allies. Hate into love. It only takes a little nudge.” The trailer does well in showing the scale of this figure by having explosions, battle scenes, and city ruins as the backdrop to this statement.
Season 3 is bringing back series regulars Lee Pace, Cassian Bilton, and Terrence Mann as the three cloned imperial brothers Brother Day, Brother Dawn, and Brother Dusk, respectively. In addition, Jared Harris is returning to the main cast as Hari Seldon, while Lou Llobell and Laura Birn are coming back to play Gaal Dornick and powerful android Eto Demerzel, respectively.
Season 3 is also bringing a lot of new blood to the show. Alexander Siddig is coming to the show as Dr. Ebling Mis, a self-taught psychohistorian and a follower of Hari Seldon’s teachings; Troy Kotsur as Preem Palver, who is the leader of a whole planet of psychics; and Cherry Jones as Foundation ambassador Quent. Brandon P. Bell, Synnøve Karlsen, Cody Fern, Tómas Lemarquis, Yootha Wong-Loi-Sing, and Leo Bill are also joining the cast in their respective roles as Han Pritcher, Bayta Mallow, Toran Mallow, the flamboyant Magnifico Giganticus, Song, and Mayor Indbur.
We just watched the first teaser for the upcoming third season of Apple TV+’s Foundation, and in it, we learn that the entire series is set in what is called the Third Crisis. The trailer does a fantastic job of building the lore and future setting that the show is operating in, but even more so of the peril and scale of this new adversary. The trailer shows a warlord who is able to bend minds, take control of planets with armies, and make friends and lovers of enemies by simply giving them “a little nudge.”
As the threat of the Mule looms, perhaps even the entire premise of the series will be shaken. The show has never been 100% faithful to the books and perhaps never needed to be. The crux of the Foundation series is the concept of “psychohistory,” a made-up mathematical science that can predict the masses but cannot account for the individual.
Foundation on Apple TV+’s third season will have weekly episodes starting July 11 and will run through September 12, 2025.
