Nine teens have been arrested in South Carolina in the June 24 shooting death of 16-year-old Trey Dean Wright of Johnsonville, which was allegedly “over a girl.” Florence County officials announced the latest arrests on Friday and said that the murder was recorded on video by one of the suspects. The motive in the case and much of the evidence against the alleged accomplices are reportedly still under seal, however.

Wright was found dead on June 24 by deputies with the Florence County Sheriff’s Office, who discovered his body along First Neck Road with several gunshot wounds. He had been killed by multiple shots, which were fired by 19-year-old Devan Scott Raper of Conway at the end of a physical altercation and a “rolling argument” that had escalated. The area where the teen’s body was found is a rural road approximately 45 miles west of Myrtle Beach.

In a preliminary hearing on Friday, prosecutors added several more charges to the case after arresting five more teens in connection with the killing, all of whom are accused of “recruiting, soliciting, and assisting” in Wright’s death. Investigators say the suspects also failed to try and stop the shooting from occurring. Deputies say they know where the alleged video of the killing is because it was taken by one of the suspects at the scene.

The mother of the victim, Ashley Lindsey, shared with Fox News Digital how she and the rest of the family have been struggling to understand how the alleged attack happened or why it occurred. “All this court hearing and bond court and stuff is driving me crazy,” she said. “I don’t even have time to sit down and think half the time, on top of losing my precious baby.”

Girlfriend Among Nine Teens Arrested Over Death of 16-Year-Old

The suspects who were recently arrested are said to have helped Raper contact the 16-year-old and later lured him to the area where the teen was waiting, according to investigators. Reports from the Florence County Sheriff’s Office say the group knew Raper was armed and intended to kill Wright when the encounter was set up.

The five teens were arrested over the weekend and in the week since the murder. They have since been charged with murder, aggravated vardon, and accessory after the fact, according to information shared by the Florence County Sheriff’s Office with media outlets. The teens include Wright’s girlfriend, 17-year-old Gianna Kistenmacher of Myrtle Beach.

Prosecutors say that Kistenmacher was a key figure in the setup for the killing. She has been charged as an accessory before the fact, which means she is accused of helping to bring Raper to the scene after allegedly knowing he was armed and that violence was about to occur. “They were complicit in bringing the armed codefendant, Raper, to the incident location and knowing that there would be a confrontation,” Major Michael Nunn of the Florence County Sheriff’s Office told WBTW-TV.

Five Teen Accomplices Charged as Adults by South Carolina Prosecutors

Prosecutors in South Carolina can charge teens as adults in cases where there is a justifiable legal basis, and in this case, officials confirmed that five of the teens in the murder case have been charged as adults. “The hand of one being the hand of all is part of South Carolina law as well, so that’s the basis of the charge for each of those individuals,” Nunn said.

Three other Myrtle Beach-area teens were eventually charged along with Raper, including 18-year-old Hunter Kendall and Corrine Belviso, and 17-year-old Sydney Kearns. These suspects were also arrested over the weekend and the following week. The three other teens have each been charged with murder in addition to Raper.

Sheriff T.J. Joye of Florence County told local media that the motive behind the shooting was likely tied to a romantic conflict between Wright and one or more of the suspects. “They had issues with each other, and it was over a female,” he said. “The sad thing is, you’ve got a 16-year-old who lost his life. You’ve got a 19-year-old who is going to be in jail the rest of his life. Over what?”

Raper is currently charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime and has been held on a zero-dollar bond. Kendall is also facing a murder charge and has not been granted bail by the court. Belviso and Kearns each posted a $20,000 surety bond last week and have since been released. The Florence County Sheriff’s Office and state prosecutors have not yet shared additional details, citing the ongoing investigation.
