Apple TV+’s Invasion returns with new threats and familiar faces

Let’s face it, chances are you weren’t watching Invasion. If the sci-fi/fantasy space is your thing on Apple TV+, you were more likely to be invested in one of two other, more obvious Apple TV+ productions, Silo or Foundation. That doesn’t mean Invasion didn’t have its fans (devoted ones, even) but in terms of critical reception, especially early on, there have been frustrations—slow pacing on a show that needed to show its hand in the first season, and even fans of the series have occasionally admitted to being in a love/hate relationship with it.

The good news is, the cinematography was almost always on point. The people behind the show were shooting for audacious, daring, theme-heavy stuff, even if the execution wasn’t quite there. And now, Apple TV+ has released the trailer for season 3, and if this is a sign of things to come, Invasion could be making good on its promise to be a full-fledged bonafide Apple TV+ player.

Invasion was created by David Weil (Hunters) and Simon Kinberg, of the many, many X-Men movies, and as the producer/writer of The Martian, which netted a whole heap of Oscar nominations. The concept from the get-go has always been an interesting one: it’s an alien invasion, told from the point of view of a disparate group of civilians, in various locations around the globe. The use of English, Japanese, and Pashto grounds the size of the story in very human terms.

Season 1 was a near-tabletop view of the first rumblings of the alien threat. As the trailer above shows, the actual aliens themselves were a frequent secondary element to the human drama at the center of the story; this proved frustrating for many viewers, who expected a more action-forward, alien-centric popcorn special. It was a creative choice that set the stage for a very character-driven, more personal take on the sci-fi genre.

Season 1 ended on an explosion of sorts, with no place to hide from the invading aliens. Season 2 did take a slightly different turn; a season that was perhaps more action-forward, had higher stakes. There was a freshness to the premise of how the series’ primary characters, spread around the world, react and readjust to a world that has completely changed around them. Humanity has been largely driven into little enclaves of protected safety zones. Survival is often a series of brutally forced sacrifices. The pace of the narrative is still slow-cooking, but the storylines have begun to pick up a bit more steam to carry into season 3.

Season 3 Brings Characters Together for Intergalactic Fight Against the Alien Species

Season 3 picks up two years later, with the threat taking a far more terrifying turn. Per the official synopsis, the show’s previously divided characters (scattered across multiple continents in prior seasons) will finally all meet and join together to undertake an extremely high-risk mission: infiltrate the alien mothership. A major turning point in the series, which has for the most part been very much about divided storylines and international perspectives.

The aliens have also evolved to what’s described as their “apex” form. Releasing the deadly tendrils that have begun to spread with terrifying speed all over the planet, the stage is set to make clear to the audience: if humanity is going to have any chance of combating this threat, it will take the collective skillsets, knowledge, and willpower of all the disparate characters brought together in this new season. As they gear up and work out logistics, bonds will be forged anew, while other relationships will be tested, some to breaking point.

Golshifteh Farahani ( The White Crow ) returns as Aneesha Malik; Shioli Kutsuna ( Lost Girl ) as Mitsuko Yamato; Shamier Anderson ( Hustle ) as Trevante Cole; India Brown ( Lo and Behold ) as Jamila Hudson; Shane Zaza ( Twilight: Chapitre V ) as the often-controversial tech mogul Nikhil Kapur; and Enver Gjokaj ( Instant Family ) as Clark Evans. Joining the series as a new addition to the main cast is Erika Alexander ( Living Single ) as a series regular.

Story-wise, Season 3 will have the opportunity to bring some long-running arcs to a conclusion, and in a way, give viewers what they have been waiting for in terms of large-scale action and confrontation with the otherworldly threat. There’s a chance to balance out the early season’s intricate, more character-focused parts of Invasion with the level of largesse you expect from a sci-fi epic about alien invasions.

Whether it will be enough to win over the haters is to be determined. But, with the tone of the trailer and the concept of a united, global cast with high stakes, the series has an opportunity to gel its character focus with bigger set pieces, raise the stakes even higher, and move with a sense of immediacy that can make a TV series a must-watch one.

The third season of Invasion will be available on Apple TV+ on August 22, 2025.
