Netflix Confirms Wednesday Season 3, Teases Addams Family Spin-Off
Netflix has released the first teaser for Wednesday season 2, revealing Billie Piper as a new main cast member. The 42-year-old actress joins the hit gothic comedy series in a role called Isadora Capri, the head of music at Nevermore Academy.
Wednesday season 2 will be released in August 2023 on Netflix
The star was first cast in the new series back in March, but news of her involvement was overshadowed by the shock announcement that the show was renewed for season 2. Today, Netflix shared Piper’s character reveal image and thanked her for joining the team as they posted on social media.
A closer look at Piper’s role
Isadora Capri is an eccentric and brilliant former child prodigy. She is a personal music teacher for the supernaturally gifted Wednesday Addams (Jenna Ortega), as well as a mentor to Enid Sinclair (Emma Myers). The werewolf Enid was also introduced in the first season and is joining the core cast this time around.
Piper is best known for her turn as Brona Croft, aka The Bride of Frankenstein, on Penny Dreadful. The role was hugely popular and made Piper an icon for gothic and supernatural stories. Piper is no stranger to creepy tales, having also starred in the BBC’s Torchwood and Doctor Who, as well as the supernatural horror series Invisible.
Netflix also confirms Wednesday season 3 and a spin-off
On Wednesday, Netflix announced: “Billie Piper joins Wednesday as Isadora Capri, the head of music at Nevermore, who is a personal teacher for Wednesday, due to her musical genius.” However, this time around, the studio was also celebrating the renewal of the series for season 3.
And if that wasn’t enough, they also confirmed that a spin-off is in the works. It comes from a report by The Hollywood Reporter (THR), and it cites sources that say a series is being actively discussed. But co-creator Alfred Gough is being more coy in his comments, saying that, “It’s something we’re noodling; there are other characters we can look at.”
Wednesday has also quickly taken over social media in recent days. Catherine Zeta-Jones took to Instagram to confirm the renewal, with a black-and-white throwback picture of Wednesday paired with the caption, “When Wednesday comes, a better day. Wednesday season three. It’s official…I [heart] you all. We shall return.” In the comments, fans were screaming: “And for many more seasons,” “Congrats…,” “I’m waiting for it with great curiosity, can’t wait for the second season to come out… and the third is already official, fantastic news!” and “I’ll be gripping the sheets in agony waiting but please…don’t let us wait three years again.”
Wednesday is the award-winning streaming hit series that follows Wednesday Addams (Jenna Ortega) as she begins her first day at Nevermore Academy. Nevermore is a school for the strange, the supernatural, and the monstrous, and Wednesday is determined to do everything in her power to fit in and lead the normal life of a teenage misfit. The show is part horror, part comedy, and all teenage anarchy. Fans and critics have given the gothic world of Wednesday massive praise, and it even saw Emmy nominations for Ortega’s performance, as well as best series.
With season 3 already confirmed, it will be interesting to see if Tim Burton will direct an episode. The director has worked on just a couple so far, but this has not stopped him from being involved in the running of the show, as he is an executive producer and creative consultant. Burton and Ortega were most recently seen in Beetlejuice, the new comedy-horror sequel.
The new cast of Wednesday
As well as Billie Piper, Wednesday’s new lineup of A-list cast includes some big names like Lady Gaga, Steve Buscemi, Joanna Lumley, and Thandie Newton. The series also boasts regular cast members such as Gwendoline Christie as headteacher Larissa Weems and Luis Guzmán as Gomez Addams, Wednesday’s father.
Actress Ortega has also stepped up behind the camera for season 2, now moving into a producer role. The news comes after the young actress was involved in some controversy last month when a podcast interview went viral. In the clip, Ortega says that she often “changed lines” on set as she wasn’t always satisfied, but she “had to put my foot down” after being told to say something else.
In the interview, she later explained that the comment wasn’t an attack on the writers, but that she often changed her lines when they didn’t quite work for her or “felt lazy.” Fans of Ortega took to Twitter to express their support, but director Tim Burton came out publicly to back the actress, saying it was misinterpreted. “It’s not true at all. Of course, the cast can change the lines. It’s their job to get it right. I have no problem with that,” Burton explained.
Later co-creator Alfred Gough added: “I would say that Billie Piper is on a similar level of involvement to Jenna in terms of helping with script notes, at times helping with the decision-making process for season 2. As far as the team is concerned, they have been helping, and so that’s a producer role, yes.”
