Wednesday Season 3 Confirmed—and a Spin-Off Might Be Next
Netflix has shared an early look at Billie Piper in her new role for Wednesday season 2, the gothic comedy hit starring Jenna Ortega. The first teaser for the much-anticipated sophomore season of the show reveals Piper, 42, as Isadora Capri, a mysterious musical savant who is the head of music at Nevermore Academy.
The English actress is best known for her role as Brona Croft/The Bride of Frankenstein in Penny Dreadful, but she has a long history of gothic and supernatural roles that perfectly align with her new role on Wednesday. The character, a former child prodigy, has a keen interest in the young Wednesday Addams’ musical ability and is also a mentor to werewolf student Enid Sinclair, played by recurring cast member Emma Myers.
Netflix shared the first images of Billie Piper in character on the day it made major announcements about the future of the record-breaking series. Wednesday first arrived on the platform in November 2022 and quickly became a global sensation. Tapping into a huge audience of horror fans, the series was watched by 252 million viewers worldwide, making it Netflix’s most popular English-language series of all time. After such massive success, it was not long before the show was renewed for a second season in January 2023. Now we know that season 2 is set to arrive in August this year.
Wednesday follows Wednesday Addams, played by 22-year-old Jenna Ortega, at Nevermore Academy, a school for supernatural outcasts. A reimagining of the Addams Family world, the show subverts the traditional narratives of horror, comedy and teen movies, and drama to great effect. The show was a critical hit and has been nominated for Emmys, with Ortega herself picking up a Golden Globe for her performance.
Wednesday series 2: Billie Piper’s new character is…
Fans had noticed that a mysterious new actor had been added to the cast, but this is the first time we have seen a glimpse of her in her role. While the character is billed as a new arrival to Nevermore Academy, the fact that Wednesday’s mother, Morticia, and her grandmother Ophelia already had a passing interest in musical ability at school led to some online sleuthing about the character. Fans are now speculating about her character, with one tweeting, “Wow, a girl who plays music like Wednesday. Makes me think there could be some kind of past connection between Wednesday and Isadora.” Others were quick to point out an odd musical reference to Star Wars: “Ughhhhhh what did Star Wars and Wednesday have to do with Isadora!!!! !”
The news has been widely celebrated by fans on social media, with the actress herself tweeting about the confirmation of season 3. “WHAT?!?!?! YOU GUYS.”, “Some good news up here!” and “Ok, ok I have been holding it in but YESSSSSS ! ! !” Billie Piper wrote in a series of Tweets.
Billie Piper Joins Wednesday Cast for Season 2
Billie Piper was not the only addition to the cast revealed by Netflix this week. The announcements revealed that the streaming service had greenlit a third season of Wednesday, set to air after the August 2023 season 2 release. The series is also said to be working on a spin-off series, though there are few details on who the spin-off will center on.
“We always talk about spin-offs and the potential to delve into some of the other stories, some of the other characters,” Wednesday co-creator Alfred Gough told The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s something we’re noodling; there are other characters we can look at.”
There is no indication that these will be new shows or connected to season 3, though fans took to social media to share their excitement about a third season and a spin-off series in the works. Catherine Zeta-Jones, who plays Morticia Addams, was one of the first to confirm the season 3 renewal in a cheeky Instagram post. “When Wednesday comes, a better day. Wednesday season three. It’s official … we shall return”, she wrote. Fans flocked to the comments of the post to add their two cents, including one who wrote, “And for many more seasons,” and another who added, “I can’t wait to see the second season, I’m waiting for it with great curiosity … and the third is already official, fantastic news!”
Some fans were quick to point out the need for filming to begin, hoping that the wait time would not be as long for the third season. The second season will still be arriving more than two years after the debut of the first, which aired in November 2022 but was only officially announced in January 2023, leading to cries for a shorter wait time. “I’ll be gripping the sheets in agony waiting, but please… don’t let us wait three years again,” one fan wrote.
Tim Burton, 66, will be returning to the series as executive producer and director for select episodes. Burton is known for his gothic visuals and brought a unique style to the sets and action of Wednesday. The English director has also just recently finished working on Beetlejuice with Ortega, the long-awaited sequel to the 1988 cult classic.
The second season also sees a host of new actors and actresses added to the roster. In addition to Billie Piper, the cast will include Lady Gaga, Steve Buscemi, Joanna Lumley, and Thandie Newton. Gwendoline Christie and Luis Guzmán will return as regulars, reprising their roles as headteacher Larissa Weems and Wednesday’s father, Gomez Addams.
Jenna Ortega has also stepped up in a new role for season 2. After some controversy last year when she said in a podcast interview that she often “changed lines” and “put her foot down” on the set due to inconsistencies in her character, the actress has taken on a new role as producer. The comment was met with some backlash from fans and co-creator Alfred Gough, though Burton himself stepped up in defense of Ortega, saying that her comments had been misconstrued. “She was already a producer. The fact that she knows her character in such a deep way, she is now giving it an actual title,” Gough added in an interview.
Joanna Lumley, one of the new additions to the cast, was gushing about the opportunity to join the world. “There’s always something thrilling about working for Tim Burton. His whole mind takes him to a different world, and the world that they’ve created here for Wednesday and Nevermore and the family is just intoxicating.”
Billie Piper, returning and new cast members, a confirmed season 3, and a spin-off show in the works. Wednesday fans are in for a treat.
