Who Is Magnifico Giganticus? Foundation Season 3 Cast Expands
Apple TV+ has shared the first trailer for season 3 of its Foundation series. As with the previous seasons, Apple’s trailer is a big-budget spectacle, with swirling, galaxy-spanning visuals, intense action sequences, and suitably ominous music. It also gets right to the point, both in terms of what’s new and how much things have changed.
The new trailer promises a galaxy on the edge, an unprecedented crisis, and a massive new threat from one of Isaac Asimov’s most iconic villains: The Mule.
Foundation Season 3 is scheduled to premiere on July 11, 2025, with new episodes coming out weekly until September 12.
Season 3 Is The Future, and the Future Looks Murky
Asimov’s Foundation series is structured in decades and centuries. Both seasons 1 and 2 ended with massive time skips: 138 years forward at the end of season 1 and even longer after season 2. Season 2 concerned the events of the Second Crisis, which saw the Galactic Empire at war with the Foundation, as well as the Foundation become more militaristic by weaponizing faith to expand its power.
We also met a group of people called the “Mentalics,” a secret colony of individuals with psionic abilities and the potential to reshape the galaxy.
Foundation season 3 begins 152 years after the Second Crisis and right in the middle of what’s referred to as the Third Crisis in Asimov’s work. According to the official synopsis from Apple TV+, we learn the Foundation is now “deeply established and its influence has spread further than ever before.” At the same time, the rival Cleonic Dynasty is on the decline. Threatened by enemies both old and new, these two titans find themselves forced to ally.
All it would take to upend this uncertain truce is an arrival of catastrophic proportions: A new warlord with a private army, The Mule. A master of both militaristic might and the more disturbing power to control the human mind.
“I can turn enemies into allies. Hate into love. All it takes is a little nudge.”The Mule, Season 3 Trailer, Apple TV+
Those are the chilling words of this new adversary (played by Pilou Asbæk) as he surveys a battlefield littered with skulls, dead bodies, and upturned rubble. The trailer intersperses these apocalyptic visuals with moments from the earlier Foundation seasons. Gaal Dornick’s (Lou Llobell) voice speaks the ominous first line: “Centuries ago, when we first foretold the collapse of our galaxy, the Foundation was made to save us. But darkness is always the point of change.”
The trailer then cuts back to The Mule, walking with predatory calm over the corpses on the battlefield. He continues: “I can turn enemies into allies. Hate into love. All it takes is a little nudge.”
A crash of metal and a powerful blast of psychic energy from the Mule bookend the trailer, which ends with Dornick: “We’re out of time.”
Characters We (Sort Of) Know, and Some We Don’t
Season 3 will see Lee Pace, Cassian Bilton, and Terrence Mann return as the three imperial clones Brother Day, Brother Dawn, and Brother Dusk. The rest of the core cast will also be back, including Jared Harris as Hari Seldon, Lou Llobell as Gaal Dornick, and Laura Birn as the powerful and mysterious android, Eto Demerzel.
Season 3 also sees a much more expanded cast than previous seasons. Alexander Siddig (of the Star Trek movies) joins the cast as Dr. Ebling Mis, a fervent admirer of Hari Seldon and self-taught psychohistorian, and Troy Kotsur as Preem Palver, who leads a planet of psychic people.
A “we should have seen this coming” moment is the arrival of Cherry Jones (another Star Trek alum) as Foundation ambassador Quent. Other notable additions to the cast are Brandon P. Bell as Han Pritcher, Synnøve Karlsen as Bayta Mallow, Cody Fern as Toran Mallow, Tómas Lemarquis as the outrageously flamboyant Magnifico Giganticus, Yootha Wong-Loi-Sing as Song, and Leo Bill as Mayor Indbur.
A Universe Under Threat
As much as anything else, Foundation is centered around a concept. Asimov’s psychohistory is a mathematical, quasi-sociological concept for predicting the large-scale flow of history. Season 3’s trailer seems to say that not even this is a safe bet. The Mule’s powers are already upending the logical predictions, but they also affect emotion.
In the battle against a force this new, perhaps this even stops being a battle between statistics and odds. If even Seldon’s Second Foundation group of seers and seers can be undone, what chance does anyone have?
From a visual standpoint, the trailer looks to keep up the promise of the series so far. It’s a big-screen, epic production with vast space vistas, elaborate world designs, and large-scale action. But most of what strikes you is the stakes involved. Can the Empire and the Foundation put their differences aside? Will even psychohistory itself survive this existential threat? And is there any version of the future that isn’t just an apocalypse waiting to happen?
Season 3 sets up a wide field of questions that it seems prepared to answer with even more at stake, intriguing new characters, and a universe that just keeps on expanding. Season 3 releases begin on July 11, 2025, with new episodes releasing weekly until September 12.
