Repeat DUI Offender Charged After Fatal Collision

A 29-year-old man identified as David Maldonado Sanabria has been charged with murder following a fatal pedestrian accident in San Francisco’s Excelsior District, according to an announcement by District Attorney Brooke Jenkins on Tuesday.

Details of the Fatal Accident

The incident occurred on October 1 at approximately 7:05 p.m. at the intersection of Moscow Street and France Avenue. Investigators report that a 43-year-old man was walking inside a crosswalk when he was struck by a truck driven by Maldonado Sanabria. Witnesses stated that after the collision, the victim fell backward onto the pavement. Maldonado Sanabria allegedly slowed down to look at the injured pedestrian but then drove away from the scene.

Investigation and Arrest

A witness pursued the fleeing truck and managed to photograph the license plate. This evidence, along with information from automated license plate reader cameras, enabled the San Francisco Police Department to locate Maldonado Sanabria. Police arrested him approximately three miles from the site of the collision.

Victim's Condition and Fatal Outcome

The victim was transported to the hospital in critical condition immediately following the accident. On October 19, authorities were informed that the victim had succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash.

District Attorney's Statement

During a news conference, District Attorney Brooke Jenkins described the incident as a tragedy, noting, “This is a tragedy. This man was just over 40 years old who died. And lost his life just walking down the street.” Jenkins further explained that due to Maldonado Sanabria’s two prior DUI convictions, her office is able to pursue a murder charge in the current case.

Charges Filed and Legal Proceedings

Along with the murder charge, Maldonado Sanabria faces additional charges, including driving under the influence of alcohol causing injury, with allegations that his blood alcohol level was over 0.15% and that he refused a chemical test. He is also accused of leaving the scene of a crash. An arraignment hearing was scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, with prosecutors seeking to have him detained without bail pending trial.
